Answer
is
Saint Nicholas
Yes, modern day Santa Claus was supposed to have evolved from Saint Nicholas, who was a 3 rd century saint known for his benevolence towards people, especially children. He was popularly known for dropping gold coins through a chimney to rescue 3 girls from prostitution, which apparently fell into their ‘stockings’ left for drying. Another popular story has him rescuing 3 children, who were pickled by a butcher during a famine!
As his image evolved, the current version of our Santa Claus was supposed to have been popularised by an ad by Coco Cola in the 30 s.
