Ayyanar
There are many ancient local/village deities who got incorporated into Hinduism, whilst other continued to remain outside. The Ayyanar / Karuppusamy/ Amman gods considered to be the village proctectors, are some of the examples in South India who are still worshipped. While the Amman is the goddess of fertility/rain/health (pox), Ayyanar, sometimes with his companion Karrupusamy, are ellai-kadavuls, riding along the the village borders, and protecting it. There are similar local gods all over the country. Some consider Ayyappa as the syncretised version of Ayyanar. Others prescribe to Buddhist origins. The potters who make the terracotta statues officiate as Priests during festivals and rituals, with blood sacrifice being an important part of them.
