Gandharvas and Apsaras
Divine celestial beings, great musicians and dancers of great charm and beauty. The men are the Gandharvas, valourus and musically talented, the most popular one being, Chithrangada who took the Kauravas to task for disturbing their party.
Ramayana too has its share of gandharvas with interesting names like Tumbru, Ha Ha and Hu Hu.
Apsaras, were the female companions to the Gandharvas, of exceptional beauty and dancing abilities. The most fancy of them is said to be Tilottama, a fascinating creation of Vishvakarma, and an inspiration for my Apsara. Often, at the bidding of the gods, they were sent to distract their detractors. Many a time they were successful, getting cursed in the process. Occasionally they fell in love with their targets. More often, they left them heart-broken. Urvashi was supposed to have said this to Puruvas, who went pining after her when she left him, “I have moved on from you like the first rays of dawn. Go home, Pururava; I am as hard to catch as the wind. Female friendship does not exist; their hearts are the hearts of jackals”.
